Positive Psychology, started by Dr. Martin Seligman in 1998, shifts the focus on psychology from what goes wrong with development to what goes right! Positive psychology studies the science behind why successful people are successful, why happy people are happy and what helps, individuals, teams and relationships thrive. The science of positive psychology is a foundational component of professional coaching, as it provides coaching practitioners with research based strategies that help creative, resourceful people meet their goals
This course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of Positive Psychology and the research behind the science of happiness and well-being. Through interactive class activities and weekly “positive psychology workout” assignments, students will practice more than 20 research-based Positive Psychology interventions and develop a tool-kit of resources to enhance their personal well-being and coaching practice. With special focus on the science of goal setting and strengths, students will learn how to help their clients set the “right” goals, accelerate their goal achievement and achieve lasting change.
Finally, this class will not only teach coaches how to integrate the theory and practice of Positive Psychology into their coaching practice, it will also improve their well-being and find more meaning and joy in their coaching. While many people believe they will become happy once they are successful, research tells us that happy people become more successful, optimistic, creative, motivated and healthier. By taking this course and completing these activities, students will undoubtedly become happier and more motivated to enhance and build their coaching practice.
