Coaching is very different from any other helping profession, and as a coach you need to understand these other helping disciplines and be able to define the boundaries of each, as they relate to coaching. Here is a chart that briefly explains the different helping professions.
In order to call yourself a coach you must take professional coach training so that you are qualified to coach. While you may have felt you have been coaching all your life, there is a huge difference between people being drawn to you for advice, and having the professional skills that are needed to coach effectively. Training and certification are important to your credibility as a professional coach.
There are 3 basic levels of coach training:
1. Life Coaching Foundations Training
A comprehensive foundational Life Coach training program equips you with a deep understanding of the ethical guidelines and coaching competencies that are a prerequisite for coaching professionally. It also provides an environment in which you can practice and develop your coaching skills, under the observation of a qualified instructor. Guided practice and feedback are necessary in order to become a masterful coach. You will need Life Coach training initially no matter what niche/specialty you decide to pursue later on.
Once you are clear about your niche(s), you need to take the advanced level of coach training that will focus on preparing you to work with those target clients. Each niche has specific challenges and needs and your niche coach training will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work with that client group.
2. Advanced Niche Coach Training
Life Coach training is just the start of a coach's journey. In order to create a viable business as a coach, you need to specialize, identifying your ideal client(s) and the niche area of coaching you want to offer. Who do you want to help achieve their goals? Is it singles, couples, parents, executives, individuals making a career change, people transitioning into retirement, or do you want to coach groups and teams?
Once you are clear about your niche(s), you need to take the advanced level of coach training that will focus on preparing you to work with those target clients. Each niche has specific challenges and needs, and your niche coach training will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work with that client group.
ICA's Niche and Specialty training programs will enable you to offer a wide range of programs, services and products to your clients - and that is the cornerstone for a successful coaching business! You will need Niche Coach training.
3. Master Coach Training
Coaches are life-long learners. Any coach that wants to achieve a Master Coach designation can take advanced coach training that hones their skills and prepares them to mentor other coaches.
New Coach Path
There is no cookie-cutter training path. Because your experience, background, goals and vision for your coaching business are different from anyone else's, it is important for you to identify YOUR unique training path based on the training and mentoring you need to best support your business goals. Our Coaching Career Advisors (CCAs) will support you to map out your unique path.
Whether you want or need Coach Certification is another consideration in selecting the type of training format. If you complete the live tele-class or intensive training courses, you will receive a "Certified Coach" credential and a Certificate. Upon completion of a Self-Paced course you will receive a "Certificate of Completion," but not certification.
The good news is that you can always start with a Self-Paced Study course and upgrade at any time to the live format of that course. It is entirely up to you! Upgrading is easy and 100% of your Self-Paced course fee will be applied to your upgrade to the live training course.
Once you have completed the Life Coach training course in the format of your choice, you may take the additional training -- Niche training or a Business Building course -- in any sequence you choose. It is up to you. Our Coaching Career Advisors (CCA) can help define the best path for you based on your goals.
